Intervention Overview

This activity is a great way to work on fine motor control by having your patient thread beads onto a string. Challenge your patient with various size beads or sequencing of color, shape, or letter beads! Make some friendship bracelets — our patients have LOVED making a matching bracelet with our facility dog!

Patient Instructions

  • Patient can be sitting or standing

  • Thread beads on a string

Dog’s Role

  • Dog positioned sitting or laying in front of patient

  • Dog holds onto string while patient threads beads

    • Note: you may need to tie string onto something (like a rubber grip or handle) for dog to hold

  • Interaction level: passive

Scaling

Make it easier:

  • Use large beads

Make it harder:

  • Use small beads

  • Give sequences of colors, shapes, or letters for patient to thread
